G2 to G in Ontario: How to Get Your Full Licence

Drive2Day Driving School blog

The short answer

To get your full G licence in Ontario you must hold your G2 for at least 12 months, then pass the G road test (sometimes called the G exit test). The G2 to G wait does not get shorter with BDE. BDE reduces the earlier G1 wait.

How the G road test is different

The G road test checks that you can drive safely in more demanding conditions than the G2 test. Expect to be tested on:

Why highway practice matters

Many G2 drivers have little highway experience, because they have not needed it yet. If your daily trips stay on city streets, book some lessons or extra supervised practice on highways before the test. Start with quieter times of day, then build up.

How to prepare

  1. Check your eligibility.
Make sure you have held your G2 long enough.
  2. Practise highway skills.
Merging, passing, keeping your lane and exiting safely.
  3. Book a pre-test lesson.
An instructor can spot habits that cost points and help you fix them.
  4. Book your road test.
Book early, because appointment times can fill up.

Need a car for the test?

If you do not have a suitable car, you can use a Drive2Day vehicle for your road test. See our road test car rental page and our G2 and G lessons for details.
